“marijuana” the Word

I’ve decided it’s derogatory and I’m going to do my best to not use the word in public any longer. I’m stuck when it comes to discussing the law. Thanks to Harry and Randolph. RCW 69.51a is the Washington State Medical Marijuana Law. Not the Medical Cannabis Law (sigh).

The word is derived from “mariguan” a Spanish\Mexican word from around 1894. When Anslinger and Hearst began their crusade it was the word “marihuana” they used to hoodwink the public.  It was the marihuana smoking Blacks and Mexicans that had to be stopped from corrupting the innocent white children. The war on marij, uh, cannabis has had racial undertones from the beginning.

If you go look at the transcripts from the congressional hearings that saddled us with the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 you’ll see that a couple of hemp farmers and at least one birdseed peddler were concerned that the law would affect their business. One hemp farmer even asked if the purpose of the tax wasn’t to outlaw hemp. (I don’t know the ins and outs but apparently some other law and\or regulation stood in the way of outright outlawing hemp. The tax was the work around)

They were assuaged by silver-tongued devils telling the hemp farmers that the tax would be minor. The Goldfinches would be fine as long as the seed was sterilized. It was the marihuana smoking crazies that needed to be stopped.

And then we all got screwed.

“Marijuana” is derogatory in my opinion. It’s the word that helped them lead us to where we are today. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Pa-toi.
